Description
An album of the fantastical through and through.
Fans have had to wait many years for this work, because storyteller Asp took his time with the first album from his story-folk project HERUMOR.
The songwriter shows another side of himself – not only musically, but also by the fact that this project is not as dark and rooted in the world of gothic novels as his other band. HERUMOR moves between the twilight, dusk and the impressionistic patchworks of eternal forests and mysterious otherworlds. On this album, it is less the complicated interlaced story cycles that set the tone. Rather, with each single song, the listener receives a perfect short story in the fantasy style. The listener can enjoy tales of elves, trolls, nymphs, mysterious skeletal figures patrolling through the woods and all manner of mythical creatures. But ‘Eine Liebe nicht weniger tief’ (‘A Love No Less Deep’) also has plenty of space for sizzling erotic romanticism and tragic love stories. Emotional and mysterious but never overstepping the kitsch threshold.
The objective, according to mastermind Asp, is to offer listeners a small, intense journey with every single song. A short adventure in the mind, in order to escape everyday life, fortifying the listener so they can face the everyday monotony once more. At the same time, even in the less extensive lyrics, he succeeds in opening great gateways to other universes and in furnishing the narratives’ subtexts with depth and a rich environment. HERUMOR’s debut album builds on the extensive experience of someone who has storytelling ability running through his blood, and who was therefore able to thoroughly exploit this talent for ‘Eine Liebe nicht weniger tief’. Perhaps because, for these musical short stories, he had to deliver a concentrate that must quickly come to the point and drive forwards to the core of the matter, in order to entice the listener appreciatively into other worlds. But caution: what sounds like children’s storytime has actually been kept on a very adult level, and is therefore not just kids’ stuff.
The dimensions of HERUMOR’s sound also invite the listener to dream, just like the sung tales themselves. Absolutely exceptional musicians were recruited to play the songs. On board for example is a musical companion who has been well known in the Asp cosmos for a long time: Thomas Zöller, the first and only German to have studied the bagpipes, with a degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow. Nikos Mavridis, who has demonstrated his limitless talent in countless stage and studio productions, contributes wonderful violin playing. And chief cooperator is the multi-instrumentalist and studio expert Patrick Damiani, who can look back on a long and successful career as a musician, sound engineer and producer in his TidalWave Studio.
…and many more.
The wait has been worth it. The gateway to another world is always open a crack.
